The city was named after Columbus Powell, a farmland holder and an original settler who contributed to the development of the city. It had closely linked history to agriculture, which its early dwellers had main occupation of farming and raising animals.
The railroad arrived in Powell in the late 19th century. A train station was located in Powell by the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway, now part of the Southern Railway, which turned it into one of its important stops on the rail line. The attendant economic activity and growth followed since goods and people could now move about with greater ease.
Soon, the railroad station became a focal point for businesses and industries within the town. It was critical to this community’s social life, too—an important central meeting place for its residents and a symbol of Powell’s being “connected” to the rest of the world.
During the latter half of the 20th century, Powell had experienced tremendous residential and commercial growth. Development in Knoxville and huge improvements to the transportation infrastructure made Powell a very desirable suburb. In that period, new neighborhoods and shopping centers started to develop, together with places for recreation.
Despite this growth, Powell has still been able to hang on to that small-town character and community spirit. Civility and a stronger sense of community characterize the residents of this town, making it warm to both new and older members of the community.
A wealth of Powell’s history is preserved and celebrated through various local organizations and community groups. An annual Powell Station Celebration commemorating its railroad heritage gives the community a day of fun and frolic. Historical exhibits, live music, food vendors, and age-related activities bring out a strong sense of the past and a present full of life within this town.
Although relatively small, the Powell Museum still showcases exhibits and artifacts that outline the town’s history, tracing Powell’s development through the years. It is really a nice resource for residents and visitors looking to know more about the community heritage.
